Special events can be effective fundraising, public relations, and educational tools. This course is designed to assist nonprofit professionals, event planners, and volunteers in the A to Z of effective nonprofit event planning. After providing an overview of the potentials, limits and pitfalls (best practices and lessons learned), the course provides a basic tools and resources to use in assessing whether or not using special events would be a good resource development strategy for their organization and what types of events and at what scale would benefit nonprofit organizations with different characteristics. It includes a component on how to develop, organize, promote and implement a cost-effective event. This program provides a step-by-step timeline and budget analysis for executing successful special events including the identification of organizational goals and alignment of those goals with available resources.

Who are College of Extended Learning classes for?

Extended Learning students are degree-seeking SF State students, working professionals, students who have completed their formal education, students wanting to take a program that is not offered as a degree (such as our internationally recognized Multimedia, Design & Development program), and the general public. The College offers academic units, continuing education units, online classes, and non-credit courses. Some programs are also available for students who want to complete advanced academic degrees and certificates.Where are classes held?

Most Extended Learning classes are held at one of two locations in San Francisco: 835 Market Street, 6th Floor, at the Westfield Centre and 1600 Holloway Avenue at 19th Avenue.

We also offer courses at Sierra Nevada Field Campus and Cañada College.

Extended Learning utilizes a combination of SF State faculty and expert practitioners from the community to teach our courses. Because we can offer programs to meet the demands of the marketplace, we have the capacity to create and deliver opportunities for learning that are high quality, reasonably priced, and accessible to a broad segment of the larger community.
