About the Instructor
Founder of a travel company, Janelle Cook has been 'on the road' since her teens, when she was an exchange student in Yokohama. After college, Janelle worked as a travel writer in Tokyo for 5 years, met her American husband and made Seattle home base. Janelle has traveled widely on all continents, and enjoyed experiences as random as volunteering on a kibbutz and climbing Mt Kilimanjaro on an all - women's team. Janelle has worked in the international travel industry for over 25 years, and firmly believes that travel is transformational, and that the right trip is the best possible gift. Especially if it’s a gift you give to yourself. Empowering women to travel solo is a particularly satisfying aspect of her job. Australian by birth and West Seattleite by choice, Janelle enjoys the independent spirit and open mindedness of her neighbors, a sentiment that is reinforced each time she teaches at South. Janelle believes that Continuing Education creates a community where people pool their knowledge and experience and share it to benefit each other. Nothing makes Janelle happier than the diversity of the student body at South! Janelle holds degrees in Japanese and Linguistics from the University of Canberra, particularly loves walking vacations, and hopes to eventually complete the entire 750 mile, 88 temple Shikoku Pilgrimage.
